Constant Section Rings
Constant section rings are elliptical when installed in a groove, and make only three-point contact. They can be axially installed into machined grooves in housings or bores (internal), or on shafts (external). Constant section rings offer more clearance, but, also accommodate less force than a tapered section ring. The material width is uniform and the ring becomes elliptical when installed, making 3-point contact in a groove. Constant section rings are more difficult to install and remove and, are an economical alternative to tapered section rings depending on the application.
Materials available for constant section rings typically include carbon steel, stainless steel, phosphor bronze and beryllium copper. Finishes including; phosphate, hexavalent chrome, and trivalent chrome are available for corrosion protection. Zinc and Copper flash can be added for color coding.
